Rich, well-draining, moisture-retentive soil. pH 6.0–6.8. Collards are the most forgiving brassica — they tolerate heat and frost that wreck cabbage. Deep compost in; like all leafy brassicas they're heavy feeders.
1–1.5 inches per week. Steady water keeps leaves tender; drought makes them tough and strong-tasting. Collards laugh at light frost and even improve after a cold snap.
Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) every 7–10 days, or row cover from day one. Check leaf undersides — eggs are tiny yellow dots that become hungry green worms.
🌿 Find remedies →Heat stress. Water more, mulch hard, grow heat-tolerant varieties, and save the serious harvest for fall — Southern-seasons know: collards are a cool crop at heart.
🌿 Find remedies →Nitrogen hunger — collards are heavy feeders. Side-dress with compost or fish emulsion; yellow bottoms are the first bill the plant sends.
🌿 Find remedies →Cut outer leaves from the bottom up, leaving the crown to keep growing — 6–8 weeks of production per plant. Or harvest whole plants at 60–80 days for a big pot of greens. Leaves are sweetest after frost.
Fresh collards keep a week in the fridge in a loose bag. Blanch and freeze for months — collards freeze better than any other green. Cooked Southern-style, they reheat like they were made yesterday.
