How the map works
Each zone covers a 10°F temperature range, split into "a" (colder half) and "b" (warmer half). A plant labeled "hardy to zone 5" can survive typical winters in zones 5 and warmer.
The 2023 USDA map reflects climate warming — many areas shifted half a zone warmer vs. the 2012 version. Our map shows the most common zone per state — actual zones vary by elevation, proximity to water, and urban heat.
