Well-draining, fertile loam. pH 6.0–7.0. Work in 2 inches of compost before planting. Garlic hates wet feet — raised beds are ideal in wet climates.
Watering
1 inch per week until early June, then stop. Withholding water the last 3–4 weeks before harvest triggers the papery wrapper to form and extends storage life.

- Days 1–3Plant individual cloves in fall (Oct–Nov), pointed end up, 2 inches deep, 6 inches apart. The largest cloves produce the largest bulbs.
- Days 4–14Green shoots emerge within 2 weeks in mild zones, or in spring after winter in cold zones. This is normal and healthy.
- Days 15–21Mulch 4 inches deep with straw over winter. This insulates roots and suppresses weeds. In zones 3–5, mulch is essential for survival.
- Days 22–30If planting in spring (softneck varieties only), shoots emerge quickly. Begin feeding with nitrogen fertilizer to push leafy growth.
