Tending the crop…

The tallest member of the vegetable-bed ecosystem — a pollinator powerhouse, a natural trellis, and a seed crop in one. Grow mammoths for the wow, branchy types for the birds and salads.
One sunflowers plant produces roughly 2 lbs. Worth $5.98 vs a $3.99 seed cost.
Lineages for your homestead goals
The classic giant — 10+ feet tall, huge seed heads for roasting.
A 2-foot potted sunflower with full-size flowers — container-friendly.
A branching multi-flower type — a pollinator magnet with 6+ blooms per plant.
Branching mix of reds, golds, and rust — the cut-flower garden's favorite.
Soil · Water · First 30 days · Monthly care · Troubleshooting · Harvest
Deep, well-draining, slightly alkaline soil. pH 6.0–7.5. Sunflowers are prairie plants — they want depth for their taproot and they don't care about fertility. Rich soil grows monster giants; lean soil grows more, smaller blooms.
1 inch per week until flowers form, then taper. Deep, less-frequent watering beats sprinkles — the taproot reaches down for it. Overwatering tall varieties makes them lodge (tip over) in wind.
Night patrol, beer traps, or diatomaceous earth around young plants. Once stems are pencil-thick, slugs move on — it's only the seedling phase that's critical.
🌿 Find remedies →Cover heads with paper bags or row cover when petals drop. Or plant extra and share — goldfinches at a sunflower head is one of the great garden sights.
🌿 Find remedies →Stake giants early, plant on the lee side of the garden, and don't over-fertilize — soft fast growth is weak growth. Some gardeners top giants at 6 feet for sturdiness.
🌿 Find remedies →Cut flowers at peak for bouquets (they last a week+). For seed, cut heads when the backs turn yellow-brown and petals droop, then dry indoors — seed is ready when it rubs free easily.
Dry seed heads for 2–4 weeks in a dry, airy spot; thresh and store seed in airtight jars — they keep for years. Roast for eating at 300°F for 15–20 minutes.
