Soil
Well-draining, sandy or gravelly soil. pH 6.0–8.0. Amend lightly with compost. Avoid heavy clay and over-fertilization — lean soil concentrates essential oils and flavor.
Watering
Deep but infrequent. Allow soil to dry out between waterings. Established plants need about 1 inch every 1–2 weeks during dry spells. Overwatering kills rosemary faster than drought.
🗓️ The First 30 Days
- Days 1–3Plant 2–3 feet apart in full sun (6+ hours). Crown level with soil. Rosemary needs excellent drainage from day one.
- Days 4–7Apply 2-inch mulch keeping it away from the stem. Mulch retains warmth and moisture without causing crown rot.
- Days 8–14Water once a week only if no rain. Rosemary roots deeply — don't coddle it with frequent watering.
- Days 15–21Pinch or trim top 1–2 inches of new growth with garden scissors to encourage bushy shape. Do this early.
- Days 22‗30Watch for yellowing leaves (overwatering) or wilting (underwatering). Adjust accordingly. Rosemary is more likely to die from too much water than too little.
